Casino helps county tourism

Tuesday, Feb 2

The Calhoun County Convention & Visitors Bureau in Battle Creek, Mich., saw a big jump in the last half of 2009, thanks to the new FireKeepers Casino. After the casino opened Aug. 5, 2010, tourism in the county jumped 11.8 percent from August to December 2009. “The only obvious thing that’s different from the second half of 2008 was the opening of the casino,” says Dwight Butt, president of the Calhoun County CVB. “One could conclude that a good bunch of that 11.8 percent increase is because of the casino.” The CVB expects a 3 percent increase in tourism in 2010 due exclusively to the casino, and another 3 percent jump due to CVB conventions.
