Special Places: Corn Palace
A group venue adorned with minarets and colorful corn-cob murals — who knew? Well, the farmers of Mitchell, S.D., for one. They’ve been displaying each new fall harvest here annually in the building’s themed, corn-adorned exterior walls since the first Corn Belt Exposition in 1892. The Corn Palace interior features nearly 40,000 square feet of flexible space, with a 10,000-sq.-ft. arena, and another 4,800 square feet in the kitschy, retro-styled lobby. The palace also features banquet space for up to 875, with floor space that accommodates 3,200 for various events.
