Writing on the wall

Murphy’s Law seems to apply to writing surfaces as much as anything else in life. Whenever a great idea hits, there never seems to be a handy spot to jot it down before it’s forgotten forever. And writing on the walls generally is frowned upon, that is, unless you’re staying at the Hotel Keen in Palo Alto, Calif., where rooms are adorned with whiteboard writing surfaces. It’s all part of the hotel’s business traveler-friendly goal, and guests can expect more than easy note-taking: iHome docking stations and complimentary Wi-Fi are among the hotel’s amenities. Hotel Keen isn’t alone in offering writing surfaces in unexpected places. Hotel Jupiter in Portland, Ore., has chalkboard doors, and Hotel Metropolis in San Francisco has chalkboard walls in its kids’ suite. NU Hotel in Brooklyn, N.Y., goes the extra mile to make sure no moment of inspiration is missed — its bathrooms are outfitted with a chalkboard wall.
