Construction begins on Kentucky convention center
Construction on a new convention center that is part of a $44 million downtown project in Owensboro, Ky., has begun. Expected to open late next year, the 169,000-sq.-ft. building will overlook the Ohio River and be flanked by a Holiday Inn and Hampton Inn and Suites, which is also under construction. The two-level center will feature a 40,500-sq.-ft. ballroom that can be divided into three spaces with folding walls. Owensboro Mayor Ron Payne thinks the convention center is a great anchor for the development. “There’s an excitement in this city I haven’t seen in my lifetime. We’re capturing the attention of the entire country,” he said. “We’re sending a message to the region, the state and the nation that we are open for business.”
