Derek Anderson, Richard Allen Young Adult Council, AME Church
Resume: Derek Anderson’s entire career has been one of service. He was the first African-American student body president at Capital High School in Charleston, W.Va., and after graduating from Marshall University, he became assistant to the university’s president. He was later an economic development specialist for the U.S. Senate and held several positions in public service and nonprofit organizations. Currently, Anderson is assistant director of public utilities for Columbus, Ohio. For the AME Church, Anderson has served at all levels, including treasurer of the AME Church’s board of trustees. He also oversees and directs the AME Church’s ministry and programs for young adults, promoting open, honest dialog and communication worldwide for members aged 26 to 39. It’s a group Anderson expects will set the direction of the church today and tomorrow. As international president of the AME Church’s Richard Allen Young Adult Council, Anderson oversees meetings, leadership forums, community service projects and networking opportunities. Events have included Young Adult Summit and Leadership conferences in Los Angeles; Columbus, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; Little Rock, Ark.; and Atlanta.
Career Highlight: Being the youngest person to be elected to the AME church’s board of trustees. Also, receiving three honorary doctorate degrees before his 35th birthday (from Shorter College, Baldwin College and Jackson Theological Seminary).
Inspiration: His 2 1/2-year-old son and new daughter, who will be born in November. “They’re the inspiration that keeps me doing what I’m doing.”
