Gabriela Contreras, Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
Director for Meeting Planning
Chicago, Illinois
Age: 37
Resume: When Gabriela Contreras became involved with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America at 18, she had no idea that her volunteer work would turn into a career. After stints in the IT department, working as an administrative assistant and an assistant to the executive director, she landed her current position as director for meeting planning for the Women of the ELCA. “Looking back I would have never thought that starting off as a volunteer would lead me to this position,” says Contreras, a Chicago native. “But I am a firm believer that my work represents me. I believe that one cannot expect greatness from others without expecting greatness from one’s self first.”
Career Highlight: “I believe that my best accomplishment to date is my career itself and a successful 2011 Triennial Gathering in Spokane, Wash.”
Inspiration: Contreras credits her family, the Women of the ELCA organization, and her work ethic as her inspiration. “I am inspired by the work that I do and whom I do it for. It inspires me to challenge myself and grow, learning from all whom I meet.”
Industry Mentors: “I believe that those in the meeting planning industry are my mentors. I have met and learned from many people, those who have been in the business for years as well as those who are just beginning.”
