All Flights into New Orleans Canceled

New Orleans has canceled all flights arriving to and departing from its airport today. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport has shut down as Tropical Storm Isaac heads toward the city. The storm, which is expected to become a Category 1 hurricane before it makes landfall later tonight, bears down on New Orleans on the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

“There’s an extra sensitivity about what went down during Katrina,” said Keith Gerr, a spokesman for data tracker flightstats.com, in a Businessweek article. “You’ve got airports and airlines that maybe in the past they’ve waited until the last second to cancel flights, but they’re being very proactive this time.” United’s operations will resume Aug. 30, while Southwest has not decided when service will restart. Other airlines affected by the closure include Delta and JetBlue. According to flightaware.com, airports in Gulfport-Biloxi, Miss., and in Mobile, Ala., are expected to close today, while the Pensacola, Fla., airport is already shut down.
