Have you ever hesitated to hop on the scale after a site visit or long event? You aren’t alone! It can be hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle in the hospitality industry. Being on the road entails a lot of dining out, cocktail hours and eating at abnormal hours. And let’s be real: Having dessert placed in front of you at every conference meal doesn’t help. Here are a few things I focus on to keep my health in check while traveling.
1) I come up with a plan and stick to it.
This helps me stay on track with my diet and fitness goals while away from home. If I’m going to be gone for more than a week, I might plan out my meals or take a trip to the grocery store while on-site. I like to keep a few no-cook meals in my hotel room, such as Greek yogurt with fruit or hummus and veggies.
2) While it’s hard to avoid eating out, I limit larger portions than what I normally eat at home.
Site visits usually involve a lot of restaurants, so I try to only eat half of the entree or opt for a salad instead of a burger. I always find myself feeling more energized and ready to work an event if I’ve chosen lighter food options.
3) Conference days can seem really long, but I don’t let that be my excuse not to exercise.
While traveling, I still try to get 30 minutes of exercise a day, even if that means doing pushups, situps and jumping jacks in my hotel room. I seek out creative ways to incorporate exercise into my routine on the road, like using a towel as a yoga mat and following fitness videos on YouTube.
4) I always try to stay hydrated and keep my hunger satisfied.
I admit it’s hard to remember to drink of plenty of water while on a site visit or at an event, but I try to make a conscious effort to drink more water than I normally do. I also like to bring a few healthy snacks with me, like fruit or a bag of almonds, that I can eat throughout the day. This helps me stay energized and allows me to eat meals in moderation later in the day.
