New Year’s Resolutions for Every Event Professional

By Leigh Harper, December 29, 2016

Chances are high someone will ask about your new year’s resolutions soon. We know you want to exercise and eat better, but have you considered how you will work smarter next year? We’ve come up with four new year’s resolutions for you to mull over as you celebrate this weekend, and then come back to the office ready to get after them.

> Plan ahead.

Move up the start date of every event timeline you create by at least one month. You will not regret giving yourself more margin for the unexpected things that will inevitably come up and the things that will end up taking longer than you expected. Give yourself and the colleagues, vendors and organizations you work alongside a little breathing room.

> File everything.

Create digital and physical archives for each event in the new year so you have final versions of everything you create on file. Make a folder on your computer for each event and drop final versions of all documents (invitations, guest list, run-of-show, photos) into it. Drop that folder on the cloud while you’re at it, and then find a drawer in your office to store physical copies of any print collateral. You’ll be glad to know exactly where to find this information when you need to reference it in the future.

> Be intentional.

Don’t do anything because it’s what you did last year. Make sure everything you dedicate resources and energy to is still serving your mission and bottom line. Once you do that, take a minute to see if there’s a more efficient way to accomplish your to-do list this time around with an app or new technology.

> Invest in relationships.

Take time to consider the individuals, organizations and companies you couldn’t have functioned without last year. Do something to make sure they know how much you appreciated them. Write a heartfelt note or send a little gift. Everyone expects gifts around the holidays, but no one expects a “just because” gift in January or February. Communicate value to those who make your load lighter.
