Deion Sanders on Faith, Football and Fatherhood

Tell us about Restore to regrow your hair.

Restore is a wonderful company. They do a phenomenal job and I am ecstatic about the procedure. Thousands of African-American men have chosen to do such a thing because of how vocal I was about the process. I’m happy. Man, it adds youth and makes me feel better. I want to look like my sons—all three of them. It is working out.

Do you want your kids playing football?

All my kids play. Football is the reason they sleep in the beds they sleep in; football is the reason they are in the cars they drive. Football is the reason I spend time with them and raise them properly. That’s what football has done. I can’t turn my back on the gift the game has presented to me. It’s truly a gift.

What about football translates to ordinary life?

My greatest accomplishments have nothing to do with me alone. It has always been as part of a team. I articulate that daily with the kids I coach and my own kids. To really provoke change, it is going to take a team—not just you.

Looking back at your life, is there anything you can’t believe you’ve accomplished?

I’m never going to say, ‘I can’t believe I did this.’ But I am most proud of being the father I am. I really am.

What has fatherhood meant to you?

Fatherhood provokes more responsibility. It makes you look at life totally differently. You are not just living for you. Once upon a time when you have no children, you tend to be selfish and look out for yourself. Fatherhood changes that whole dynamic. Now you are looking out for the child first and for their future, health, welfare and stability. Fatherhood has the capacity to change a multitude of things instantly.
