Do’s and Don’ts to Avoid Travel Pain

Travel can be a real pain in the neck…and back…and wrist, and just about anywhere else, as planners and attendees know all too well. To keep the aches to a minimum, we sought the advice of Stacy Pepitone, meetings manager of the American Chiropractic Association, who is a certified trainer. Here are some of her travel tips:

Do

Get a massage: Getting a rubdown before flying relieves stress that can build into something much worse.

Stretch before boarding: A full-on calisthenics session in front of strangers at a gate may be daunting, but hamstring and quad stretches that can be done standing up without embarrassing yourself are a good idea.

Stay hydrated. “For people who don’t like water, my best advice is to find a way to drink water you like,” says Pepitone, noting attendees can get water with an orange or lime at an airport coffee shop if plain H20 isn’t their thing.

Don’t

Sit still for too long: Getting up frequently in flights keeps the blood moving and prevents muscles from tightening. A bonus tip is to get an aisle seat, making it easing to get up and down.

Work too much on the plane: Staring at a laptop or smartphone in uncomfortable seats for long stretches can lead to text neck.

Pack too heavy: Check a bag if you need to lessen the weight you’re lugging around an airport, advises Pepitone. “You pay $25 for a bag or hurt your back. You do the math.” Hopefully, you can expense the fee for checking luggage.
