Hotel News You Need: Spring 2017

With spring 2017 upon us, the latest set of hotel builds, restorations and renovations emerge. Take a look at what’s new and notable for meeting planners.


Albany, New York, got a new convention center when Albany Capital Center opened its doors this year. The glass structure accommodates meetings for up to 5,000 people and be connected via an enclosed walkway to the recently renovated Renaissance Albany Hotel, a plus for groups planning events there in winter.

After about a year’s absence from downtown, Conrad Chicago reopened in a new location on the Magnificent Mile in December 2016 with 287 guest rooms, 10,000 square feet of event space and three on-site restaurants.

The massive 37-story, 1,048-room Fairmont Austin (shown) will open this August in downtown Austin, Texas, and be directly connected to Austin Convention Center. With nearly 140,000 square feet of meeting space, the new Fairmont is expected to become a major player in the trendy city’s meetings market.

Hotel Bennett will add a touch of luxury to downtown Charleston, South Carolina, when it opens in spring 2018. The 179-room hotel will be located on Charleston’s prominent King Street and include meeting space, a ballroom, a rooftop pool, a spa and a French patisserie.

Hyatt Place Boca Raton/Downtown, the first hotel in downtown Boca Raton, Florida, debuted in December 2016. The limited-service hotel has 4,000 square feet of meeting space and a terrace.
