5 Feel-Good Nostalgic Cities for Meetings

By Michael J. Solender, August 3, 2016

It’s time to capitalize on America’s retro craze when bringing together nostalgia-craving boomers and tech-loving millennials. Responding to the emerging trend, hotels and resort properties are rolling out old-timey experiences ranging from special game parlors to vintage lobby shoeshine stands. For example, visitors of the ’60s-style Thunderbird Inn in Savannah, Georgia, are welcomed upon check-in with popcorn, MoonPies and RC Cola.

Traditional comfort food—albeit amped and often served with a contemporary twist—is making its way onto menus at group dining venues. Classic desserts such as s’mores ice cream sandwiches and chocolate peanut butter pie found at Emeril’s New Orleans illustrate this shift. Likewise, transportation is following suit. San Francisco’s legendary cable cars are finding competition for old-school city sightseeing. Nearly a dozen U.S. cities including Atlanta, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Seattle, St. Louis and Tucson, Arizona, have streetcar projects established or in the works.

These five American cities—each offering nostalgia-rich venues, experiences and entertainment—can help you create a bespoke throwback experience to please multigenerational groups. They each prove the good ol’ days are back.
